We also show that generalized signatures of electron fractionalization are present in the angle-resolved photoemission spectra for quasi-two-dimensional purple bronzes and certain cuprates. An important component of our analysis for the quasi-two-dimensional systems is the proposal of a ``melted holon'' scenario for the k-independent background that accompanies but does not interact with the peaks that disperse to define the Fermi surface.},

abstract = {A universal high energy anomaly in the single particle spectral function is reported in three different families of high temperature superconductors by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. As we follow the dispersing peak of the spectral function from the Fermi energy to the valence band complex, we find dispersion anomalies marked by two distinctive high energy scales, E1[approx]0.38 {eV} and E2[approx]0.8 {eV.} E1 marks the energy above which the dispersion splits into two branches. One is a continuation of the near parabolic dispersion, albeit with reduced spectral weight, and reaches the bottom of the band at the [Gamma] point at [approx]0.5 {eV.} The other is given by a peak in the momentum space, nearly independent of energy between E1 and E2. Above E2, a bandlike dispersion reemerges. We conjecture that these two energies mark the disintegration of the low-energy quasiparticles into a spinon and holon branch in the high Tc cuprates.},

abstract = {{\textless}p{\textgreater}{\textless}br/{\textgreater}Quasi-low-dimensional (quasi-low-D) inorganic materials are not only ideally suited for angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy ({ARPES)} but also they offer a rich ground for studying key concepts for the emerging paradigm of non-Fermi liquid (non-{FL)} physics. In this article, we discuss the {ARPES} technique applied to three quasi-low-D inorganic metals: a paradigm Fermi liquid ({FL)} material {TiTe2}, a well-known quasi-{1D} charge density wave ({CDW)} material {K0.3MoO3} and a quasi-{1D} non-{CDW} material {Li0.9Mo6O17.} With {TiTe2}, we establish that a many body theoretical interpretation of the {ARPES} line shape is possible. We also address the fundamental question of how to accurately determine the {kF} value from {ARPES.} Both {K0.3MoO3} and {Li0.9Mo6O17} show quasi-{1D} electronic structures with non-{FL} line shapes. A {CDW} gap opening is observed for {K0.3MoO3}, whereas no gap is observed for {Li0.9Mo6O17.} We show, however, that the standard {CDW} theory, even with strong fluctuations, is not sufficient to describe the non-{FL} line shapes of {K0.3MoO3.} We argue that a Luttinger liquid ({LL)} model is relevant for both bronzes, but also point out difficulties encountered in comparing data with theory. We interpret this situation to mean that a more complete and realistic theory is necessary to understand these data.{\textless}/p{\textgreater}},

abstract = {The satellite structures of 3s core-level photoemission spectra of Mn and Fe dihalides and mono-oxides have been studied systematically. We found that exchange splitting between 3s holes and 3d electrons, intrashell electron correlation, and final-state screening (charge-transfer satellite) effects all contribute to their satellite structures. We extended the existing model of 2p core-hole satellite structures for transition-metal compounds [Park et al., Phys. Rev. B 37, 10 867 (1988)] to the case of 3s core holes by including the exchange interaction and the intrashell electron correlation effect. The intrashell electron correlation effect is included by introducing two parameters, the energy separation and the coupling strength between 3s3dn and 3p23dn+1 states. With this model, we were able to explain very well the 3s spectra of the Mn and Fe insulating compounds studied here, and which were consistent with their 2p core-level spectra analyses. We observe that the importance of final-state screening effects in the core-level spectra depends on the ligands. As a result, 3s energy splittings for very ionic compounds such as {MnF2} and {FeF2} can be well understood by exchange splitting alone, but that 3s splittings in other compounds in general are not directly related to the 3d local magnetic moment of the ground state. We found that the change of 3s splittings in more covalent compounds is mostly determined by the final-state screening due to the different values of 3s-hole--3d-electron Coulomb attraction Q depending upon the spin of the final state, rather than the exchange energy between 3s holes and 3d electrons.},

The {IE} in the {ARPES} linewidth and the {IE} in the {ARPES} dispersion are both quite large, implying a strong electron-lattice correlation. The strength of the electron-lattice interaction is ``intermediate,'' i.e., stronger than the Migdal-Eliashberg regime but weaker than the small polaron regime, requiring a more general picture of the {ARPES} kink than the commonly used Migdal-Eliashberg picture. The two {IEs} also imply a complex interaction, due to their strong momentum dependence and their differing sign behaviors. In sum, we propose an intermediate-strength coupling of electrons to localized lattice vibrations via charge density fluctuations.},

For {NiO} films thinner than a critical thickness of about 10~{ML} the {NiO} {AFM} moments align in-plane perpendicular to the Fe substrate magnetization. Just above the critical thickness the coupling turns out to be collinear. The behavior for very large {NiO} thicknesses (up to about 80~{ML)}, studied by applying an external magnetic field, shows a complete reversal of the {NiO} domains, for a 90[deg] rotation of the substrate magnetization. Furthermore, a decreasing trend of the {NiO} {XMLD} signal as a function of the {AFM} film thickness is shown.  abstract = {We report experimental evidence for a transition in the interface coupling between an antiferromagnetic film and a ferromagnetic substrate. The transition is observed in a thin epitaxial {NiO} film grown on top of Fe(001) as the film thickness is increased. Photoemission electron microscopy excited with linearly polarized x rays shows that the {NiO} film is antiferromagnetic at room temperature with in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. The anisotropy axis is perpendicular to the Fe substrate magnetization when the {NiO} thickness is less than about 15 \AA{}, but rapidly becomes parallel to the Fe magnetization for a {NiO} coverage higher than 25 \AA{}.},

abstract = {This paper reports the synthesis and detailed characterization of graphite thin films produced by thermal decomposition of the (0~0~0~1) face of a {6H-SiC} wafer, demonstrating the successful growth of single crystalline films down to approximately one graphene layer. The growth and characterization were carried out in ultrahigh vacuum ({UHV)} conditions. The growth process and sample quality were monitored by low-energy electron diffraction, and the thickness of the sample was determined by core level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy shows constant energy map patterns, which are very sharp and fully momentum-resolved, but nonetheless not resolution limited. We discuss the implications of this observation in connection with scanning electron microscopy data, as well as with previous studies.},

abstract = {In this paper, we present a high resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy ({ARPES)} study of the electronic properties of graphite. We found that the nature of the low energy excitations in graphite is particularly sensitive to interlayer coupling as well as lattice disorder. As a consequence of the interlayer coupling, we observed for the first time the splitting of the [pi] bands by [approximate]0.7~{eV} near the Brillouin zone corner K. At low binding energy, we observed signatures of massless Dirac fermions with linear dispersion (as in the case of graphene), coexisting with quasiparticles characterized by parabolic dispersion and finite effective mass. We also report the first {ARPES} signatures of electron-phonon interaction in graphite: a kink in the dispersion and a sudden increase in the scattering rate. Moreover, the lattice disorder strongly affects the low energy excitations, giving rise to new localized states near the Fermi level. These results provide new insights on the unusual nature of the electronic and transport properties of graphite.},

Comparison to {RLAPW} band structure calculations shows very good agreement of the d-band structure away from {EF.} Discrepancies in the near {EF} region highlight k-dependent effects of f-correlation and f-d hybridization. Approximately equal dimensions of Fermi contours for X=(La, Ce) suggest the exclusion of 4f electrons from the {CeRu2Si2} Fermi surface at temperatures far above the Kondo temperature. High-resolution spectra for X=(Ce, U) allow comparison of f-d mixing to predictions of the Anderson lattice model.},

abstract = {The stoichiometric rare-earth compound {YbInCu4} is known for its first-order valence transition at {Ta[approx]55K} and ambient pressure. Although this valence transition has been extensively studied by various volume-sensitive experimental methods, highly surface-sensitive photoemission measurements in the vuv energy range [ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy ({UPS)]} could not observe a sharp valence change of the Yb valence {vYb} at the transition temperature. Instead there is only a smooth temperature dependence of {vYb} over a large temperature range. Furthermore, the low-temperature values for the hole-occupation number {nh=vYb-2} from {UPS} are significantly below the values of volume-sensitive measurements. Here we present temperature-dependent photoemission data on {YbInCu4} measured at photon energies of {h[nu]=1486eV} [x-ray photoemission spectroscopy ({XPS)]} with a significantly increased information depth in comparison to previous experiments with lower photon energies. These data clearly show the existence of a valence transition at the extended sampling depth of the {XPS} experiment, in contrast to results from the distorted near-surface region.},

abstract = {The electronic structure of the layered compound {1T-TiTe2} has been studied in detail by high-resolution angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy ({ARPES)} and density-functional band calculations. The results confirm the semimetallic nature of this material as due to an overlap of Te 5p- and Ti 3d-like conduction bands. We find an overall good correspondence between experiment and theory, with all {ARPES} structures accounted for by the calculated band structure. Particular focus is applied to the bands near the Fermi level and to the Fermi-surface topology. Interesting behavior is observed for an essentially Ti {3dZ2-derived} conduction band, whose measured Fermi vector and qualitative shape are excellently reproduced by the calculation. However, the experimental energy dispersion of the Ti 3dz2 {ARPES} peak appears to be considerably reduced with respect to band theory. From these results we obtain a picture of the electronic structure of {1T-TiTe2} as that of a Fermi liquid with renormalized quasiparticle dispersions and a Fermi surface in accordance with Luttinger's sumrule. We show that the experimental Ti 3dz2 emission is quasi-two-dimensional near the Fermi surface, which, together with its being remarkably unobscured, virtually free of any interference with other spectral structures or inelastic background, makes it an ideal object for {ARPES} line-shape studies on a Fermi-liquid system. \copyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.},

abstract = {We present angular resolved photoemission data of the quasi-one-dimensional metals {K0.3MoO3} and ({TaSe4)2I.} The measured conduction band dispersions reflect the highly anisotropic nature of these materials. However, no clear Fermi-Dirac cutoff is observed in the spectra above the Peierls transition, being due to either charge density wave ({CDW)} fluctuations or due to electronic correlation effects in one dimension. The experimental conduction band width of ({TaSe4)2I} agrees well with a tight-binding calculation, suggesting a description as a conventional Peierls system with {CDW} fluctuations suppressing the spectral weight at the Fermi energy. In contrast, the spectra of {K0.3MoO3} show an excitation which along the direction of highest conductivity ("easy axis") disperses 5 times faster than expected from band theory. This anomalous increase cannot be explained by electron-electron or electron-phonon interactions in a Fermi liquid scenario, but can be accounted for as holon dispersion in a Luttinger liquid framework, which need not conflict with the material's {CDW} properties.},

This paradoxical coexistence can be explained in terms of van Hove singularities in the angular density of states. In addition, nondispersive features at the energies of band maxima and saddle points are observed and possible explanations are discussed. The ``nesting wave vector,'' i.e., the wave vector that connects two nearly flat pieces of the {FS} in the antinodal region, reveals a universal monotonic decrease in magnitude as a function of doping. Comparing our results to the charge order recently observed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy ({STS)}, we conclude that the {FS} nesting and the charge order pattern seen in {STS} do not have a direct relationship. Therefore, the charge order likely arises due to strong-correlation physics rather than {FS} nesting physics.},
