[The following is a copy of an email message, plus small addtions, sent to all students around 6:30 PM on Jan 25.] Some students failed to turn in homework in the 9-3 window on Friday, and have asked for late acceptance of homework.
In response, I am giving some additional time for everyone (to be fair), only for this time. Part of the reason for giving additional time this timen is due to my cancellation of class on last Thursday, which may have disrupted the normal flow of things a bit.
However, note that, by policy, late homework is not allowed in this course (the syllabus has been updated with this policy explictly stated now; also drop-one policy for homework is explictly stated in the syllabus).
Regarding homework 2:At this point, homework 2 must be submitted to me, by email (since Monday would be too late). The PDF format works the best.
The new deadline is 3 PM tomorrow (Jan 26).
- Even if you already submitted your homework, you may submit corrections or additional work.
Of course, if you already submitted your complete homework on Friday, you do not need to submit any more work.
Notes for future homework (check the updated syllabus at Syllabus+):
- No late submission is allowed.
- Your worst homework score will be dropped at the end of the quarter.
This Thursday’s office hour from 9 to 10 is cancelled, as is Thursday’s class.—3:56PM, Jan 22, 2014
This information was not accurate. This Wednesday’s office hour will be held as usual.I need to be out of town next Wednesday (Jan 22), so I cannot have my office hour, then. If you would be affected by this, and you have idea about how I can make it up, I am all ears.—1:59PM, Jan 15, 2014
An important correction in homework 2. Please check it out at Homework+.—7:34PM, Jan 17, 2014
Reading quiz 3 is up now. On a related note, this page (“How do I do the reading quiz”) has been updated substantially. Please read it now!—9:58AM, Jan 15, 2014
Your cooperation needed. From today’s class, I will be collecting your homework. When you hand in your homework, please place it in the right bin on the front desk of the lecture hall. Your bin will be defined by your last initial—there will be seven such bins on the front desk, alphabetically grouped. Thanks!!—10:27AM, Jan 16, 2014
NO Mastering Physics and NO i-Clicker will be used in this course. Do NOT buy them. This is a big difference from the last year, since we used both then.
As for the textbook, it is Physics for Scientists And Engineers With Modern Physics, 4th ed., Giancoli. We will cover Chapters 12—16 and 32—35 in 5B. For more details, check the syllabus in this page.
Welcome students! This course will proceed somewhat like the last year's course, but with some important differences.—7:54AM, Dec 29, 2013
The syllabus for this site will be posted as the new quarter starts, but you can already learn about the textbook and the chapters to be covered from the last year’s syllabus, since they will remain the same. Similarly, it would be a great start if you browse through my lecture notes of the last year.

The second reading quiz is up. Please follow the “RQ” link above.—10:34AM, Jan 13, 2014
The number of midterm exams may not be the same as the last year’s, although I am not absolutely decided on this at the moment.
Check the last year’s syllabus for the textbook and the course topics.
