Welcome to Physics 5B, 2014!

  • Your cooperation needed. From today’s class, we will be collecting your homework. When you hand in your homework, please place it in the right bin on the front desk of the lecture hall. Your bin is defined by your last initial—there will be seven such bins on the front desk, alphabetically grouped. Thanks!!—10:27AM, Jan 16, 2014

  • I need to be out of town next Wednesday (Jan 22), so I cannot have my office hour, then. If you would be affected by this, and you have idea about how I can make it up, I am all ears.—1:59PM, Jan 15, 2014

  • Reading quiz 3 is up now. On a related note, this page (“How do I do the reading quiz”) has been updated substantially. Please read it now!—9:58AM, Jan 15, 2014

  • Thanks to those students who participated in the device poll. Here is a summary.

  • NO Mastering Physics and NO i-Clicker will be used in this course. Do NOT buy them. This is a big difference from the last year, since we used both then.

Welcome to the second part of Physics 5!

In this course, we will continue the exploration of the introductory physics. We will start with the simple harmonic oscillator. Then, we will study waves in general. This will lead to geometric optics and related topics. Lastly, we will come back to fluids and statics. If we somehow run out of time, we might leave some topics like fluids for reading only. I like to go through the simple harmonic oscillator and waves, slowly but surely, so that we cover these supremely important topics well enough.
