Midterm 1

This midterm will be held during the normal class hour. The exam will cover chapters 14-16. Please make sure that you understand everything that we did (all available on-line: homework, quizzes, forum discussions, lecture note, book). Some sections will be out of scope: T14.7, T14.8, T15.5 (the derivation part; the equation itself must be known), T15.10, T15.11, T16.7, T16.8, T16.6 and beyond.

The exam format will be much like the practice test: some multiple choice questions and some short write-up questions. For the latter type of questions, it would be important that you show all your steps. Otherwise, you will get very small credit, even if you get the answer correct. Multiple choice questions do not require showing your steps.

What to bring to the exam

• Well-rested brain (your own super-computer!) treated well with a good night's sleep.
• One letter size paper that you fill with any information that you want, e.g. summary formulae of what we covered. There will be no formulae sheet given in the exam. However, each question will give unusual formulae, if necessary, such as the formula for the moment of inertia or the necessary trigonometry formulae, outside the scope of the main formulae of physics. If there is a formula that you like to know, then you can ask during the exam!
• Simple calculator for calculating numbers (cf. practice exam).
• Writing equipment -- pen(s) or pencil(s).

Not allowed during the exam

• Only those things mentioned in the previous list are allowed, and nothing else. Especially, the following are mentioned.
• I-phone, i-pod, tablet, computer, or anything of the sort that enables communication.

• Cooperation with your friends. I mention this not to offend the vast majority of you, who are very integral, but to help those who might be tempted at the last minute. One of my jobs is to try my best to minimize any temptation on the student part to cooperate with friends at a wrong time.
