The MP system
The MasteringPhysics (MP) is a system that we will use for homework. It has certain good things and it also has certain bad things. I will try to maximize the benefit, and not get bogged down by bad things. Please try to do the same on your part.
It can be annoying, but it should not
The first thing that I will say is that I have tested the MP system myself, and it can be very annoying. You enter the answer, then get the feedback, and sometimes it says that you are wrong! Then, you get angry and anxious. Very annoyed. And, you click or write almost immediately, correcting your answer without even thinking clearly since you really want to get it right! If you get it wrong the second time, you start to fume! Maybe some bad words are coming out of your mouth. You try again... You get the picture.
Please keep in mind that this will happen to you.
However, here is an anti-dote to this problem. Like the quiz, you will be able to get very high homework scores, just by participating, essentially. You will see that sometimes you can get some points off. Trust me that they are not worth your disappointment, at all, in the big scheme of things (midterms and final).
Algorithm for doing homework
Please follow this algorithm for doing homework! You will do much better, and be much happier!
- Do each problem on paper first.
- Get help, if you get stuck.
- Enter the answer to the computer.
If incorrect, then give the problem some calm thoughts for about 5 to 10 minuts. Try again.
- Incorrect again? Step away, or move on to the next one.
Get help (with me, TAs, your friends, ...) and do it again the next day, or some hours later.
Grading policy
Be sure to read the grading policy carefully before you start doing the homework. Below is a screen dump from the web site, showing my grading policy.
Probably the most important item is the number of attmpts per question: 6 attempts for a general problem, or N attemps for a multiple choice problem with N+1 choices. Multiple choice problems can be especially annoying since they must incorporate, by nature, a large deduction ratio for an incorrect answer. Please read information above to not be annoyed too much by the MP system, it is a device by which we do problems, and the process of learing while you are using it is way more important than the actual points.
Grading policy shown below (click "Grading Policy" when you are in the assigment in MP to get the same information).
