Past news of persistent value
We have completed the time-dependent perturbation theory. Please read lecture notes carefully, as some contents have been mentioned only briefly during classes. After the Thanksgiving break, we will be covering Scattering. Then, Adiabatic theorem and Berry's phase, which I expect to be the last topic of this course. Happy thanksgiving! – 11:54AM, Nov 22, 2012
You may notice that there are couple of challenge questions on the forum site. If you provide a good answer to a challenge question, then you will definitely be recorded in my good deeds file. Please regard challenge questions as "bounty hunter questions" or "extra credit questions."
Couple of corrections for problem 1 of homework 4 – please check them!
Quiz solution has been posted. Please check it on page Homework+. It seems that many people got the correct answer for part (a), which is excellent! Note that an observable $\hat O$ will be conserved even if $\hat H$ is not, if $\partial \hat O / \partial t = 0$ and $[\hat O, \hat H] = 0$.
Quiz this Thursday (Oct. 11): as a rule, quiz will follow in the next class after homework has been turned in. Please consult my homework solutions (available for download for homework #1 -- check the Homework+ page) to remind yourself of key concepts that are relevant to the homework that you just turned in. Quiz will be testing those key concepts. Quiz should not take more than 15 minutes or so.
One important correction for homework problem 2(a): plane wave → sine wave. Please consult the updated pdf file in the Homework+ page. – 4:00PM, Oct 08, 2012
Please note that all course materials available from this web site are debugged and updated all the time. All changes are noted, just below the download link. Also, all changes are marked red in pdf files. Please make a habit of checking for them semi-regularly. If changes are made due to observant students pointing out to me the need to make certain changes, then those students may get some benefit of getting a small "lift" at the end of the quarter. For instance, such changes were just made in LN 2. Basically, I record what I perceive as "good student deeds" in my "good deed file" (not only for debugging course materials but also for other things such as asking good questions, leading good discussions and helping other students) and will consult it for a possible bump-up when students' grades lie near borderline at the end of the quarter. – 8:06PM, Oct 06, 2012
(Do keep on voting here.) Please participate in the office hour poll, if you have not done so already. Optionally, if you let me know by email your availability on Monday, Thursday, and Friday, that may be helpful to me, too. This would be helpful especially if you are generally unavailable for my suggested office hours.

The final exam will be posted on 3:30 PM, today. Please check the Homework+ page at that time. – 1:16PM, Dec 10, 2012
We are almost there! Tomorrow, we will have the final lecture -- which will be mostly story telling, with minimal, but just enough and essential-to-know, simple math. LN 19 had been uploaded already -- we will discuss (adiabatic) perturbation, (gauge) symmetry, Berry phase, and topological effects -- what a list of topics! So I hope that we will have loads of fun, all in connection with well-grounded, and modern, science! – 12:44PM, Dec 05, 2012
The histogram of midterm score distribution can be found at Homework+. – 5:04PM, Nov 11, 2012
- The midterm with solutions can be found at the "Homework+" link above.
- The midterm review session summary is posted, with some comments added. Click "Lecture+" above.
- The midterm will be held on Nov. 6, Tuesday, in the same class room. It will cover all materials related to Lecture 1 through Lecture 8.
The review session (for mid-term) is on this Friday (Nov. 2): 9-11 AM, ISB 165.
Quiz on this Thursday! (Oct. 25) Please read solutions to HW 3 and other related materials!
The inquiry to possibly get a new class room has been sent. I will keep you up to date, if anything develops. – I haven't heard anything about this yet, and my sense is that we will not have luck to get a new classroom. – 3:42PM, Oct 05, 2012
Homework had been distributed yesterday. It is available for downloading from above "Homework+" link. Feel free to ask questions!
