Homework
Homework set 6, due Nov. 10 (solutions).
Correction: momentum → angular momentum in 2(c).
Homework set 5, due Nov. 1 (solutions).
Grade stats: 28 ± 12 out of 50, max 50, min 2.
Due date changed. However, honing your skills on the Lagragian mechanics will prepare you well for the midterm. Very basic Lagrangian problems will feature in the midterm (see the practice exam). No Hamiltonian (or effective potential defined through Hamiltonian) will be in the midterm, though. Correction: L10 → LN 8, in problem 2.
Homework set 4, due Oct. 20 (solutions).
Grade stats: 37 ± 11 out of 60, max 60, min 13.
Problem 2: added the info that $a > 0$ is a constant too.
Homework set 3, due Oct. 13 (solutions).
Grade stats: 31 ± 11 out of 50, max 49, min 4.
Problem 6: n = integer → n = non-zero integer.
Problem 5(a): "stable" added. 5(b): "Show" → "Prove" and "indeed" added.
Homework set 2, due Oct. 6 (solutions).
Grade stats: 32 ± 14 out of 60, max 60, min 10.
Correction: sols, 1(a), line 3 of solution, at end: $\left(\begin{smallmatrix} 1\\ 0\\ 0 \end{smallmatrix}\right) \rightarrow \left(\begin{smallmatrix} 0\\ 0\\ 1 \end{smallmatrix}\right)$. — Sam, 4:49PM, Oct 10, 2011
Due date corrected (Thursday). One clause added to 3(c) ("that does not involve t").
Quiz
Quiz 3, Potential and small oscillation (solutions).
Grade stats: 4.8 ± 2.7 out of 10, max 10, min 0.
Quiz 2, Perturbation, Oct 13 (solutions).
Grade stats: 6.9 ± 2.8 out of 10, max 10, min 0.
Quiz 1, Introduction, Oct 7 (solutions).
Grade stats: 7.2 ± 2.1 out of 10, max 10, min 1.
Quiz 0, Phys-Math Questionnaire (solutions). (Not a real quiz — not graded.)
Exam
Two optional big bounty questions are posted on the forum site.
Each question, if solved perfectly, will give you and any of your group members 50 points max (as in the midterm score). However, if your midterm score is already very good (close to 200 or above it, e.g.) your bounty may decrease substantially. (However, your good work may be considered critically if your grade lies close to the grade boundary (e.g. A and A+).) This last rule is an individual curving, applied after computing the score on the group solution.
- Your group consists of maximum 3 students (and minimum 1 student) of 105.
- You are welcome to consult with other people (but me) on these questions. You can ask me only to clarify the question.
- Your group need to submit neatly written solution, after completely solving each problem. No partial solution will be accepted.
- One or two members of the group will (probably) be required to explain your written solutions in person (just like during my office hour discussions). The lowest of the interview scores will override the score of the written solution for the group, and will become the final score on the group solution (prior to the individual curving mentioned above).
- Due the day of the final exam.
Only solutions to BIG bounty questions can be submitted. NOT applicable to other bounty questions (they need to be answered on-line). Try big bounty questions only if you have extra time.
Review for the final (gravity included in the last page).
Some example problems for the final. Solutions, included.
Also, review all homework problems, including the first two problems of HW 09 (see above).
- This year's final exam may or may not be in a similar format as last year's.
Midterm (solutions) (stats and rubrics).
Correction: solutions, 4: powers of sin$\theta$ corrected.
Minor update -- some sentences added/tweaked. Nothing major. — Sam, 10:31AM, Oct 26, 2011
Practice exam for the midterm. The midterm will cover everything that we covered through Oct. 20's class (solutions).
